Wallpaper Tips

How to Estimate for Wallpaper and Border
If you are using a wallpaper hanger they will usually estimate the quantities of wallpaper and border you will need for the job.

Please remember that this is an estimate. It will take your pattern repeat and trimming waste into account but it may not be 100% accurate.

Bedrooms, Living Rooms, Dining Rooms, etc
  1. Measure the width and length of the room in feet (not inches). Round UP to the next foot. Multiply by two (2) to get the total linear feet. Multiply linear feet by height of wall in feet to get the square footage of the room.

    Example: 10 ft. wide + 12 ft. long = 22 ft. x 2 = 44 ft. around the room
    44 ft. x 8 ft. (height of wall)= 352 sq. ft.

  2. Now measure the height and width of the windows, doors, fireplaces, and any other area that will not be wallpapered. The average door is 7 ft. by 3 ft. so that would be 21 sq. ft. that needs to be deducted from the square footage of the room

Example: 352 sq. ft. (total from Step 1) subtract 82 sq. ft. (2 doors and 2 windows) = 270 sq. ft.

  3. Divide the total from Step 2 (total square footage of wall space) by 25. Round the number UP to the next even number to get the number of single rolls of wallpaper needed.

Example: Total square feet from Step 2 = 270 divided by 25 = 10.8. Round up to the next even number - 12 single rolls of wallpaper.

Wallpaper is priced and ordered by the single roll but it is packaged in double rolls.
Kitchens and Bathrooms
  1. Measure each individual section of wall - width by height by feet (not inches). Rouch UP to the next full foot.

    Example: 2'6" x 3'8" = 3'x4' = 12 sq. ft.

Continue to measure all wall spaces and determine the square footage for the total wall areas measured.

  2. Divide the total in Step 1 by 24. Round this number UP to the next even number to determine the number of single rolls needed.

Wallpaper is priced and ordered by the single roll but it is packaged in double rolls.
Borders
Borders are generally packaged in bolts of 15 ft. Simply measure the area (in feet) you want to put the border and divide that number by 15 to determine the number of bolts needed.
